We are seeking original articles for an edited collection about the representation of identity, history and culture from the perspective of the child or adolescent focalizer in modern and contemporary Latin American and Spanish cinema (from 1960 to the present).
The point of view and voice of children and youth in film correspond to a variety of representations. Children can be used to construct a biting social critique of the adult world. Furthermore, the violence experienced in many Hispanic countries over the past 50 years demands ongoing critical revision, and child and adolescent narrators comprise a vehicle for questioning the past as well as traditional values. In addition, teenagers are often deployed to highlight a coming-of-age story that marks the passage from the known universe of the family to their integration into heterogeneous societies. Films relevant to this project depict childhood as a microcosm of a world where adult characters have been and continue to be unable to negotiate difference due to the legacies of polarizing political ideologies and traditional social values. This body of cinematic work explores childhood as a site where a panorama of difference (sexual, ethnic, class, political or religious...) must negotiate a complex, and often hostile, social landscape.
We especially encourage essays that privilege the subjectivity of children and youth as focalizers and how children are deployed to mediate issues of identity and difference, history and culture, and how they question traditional ideas of the child's place in the family or nation. Finally, we encourage essays that draw upon multidisciplinary theoretical frameworks including psychology, film studies, literature, women studies, trauma and memory studies, and queer studies.
Contributions should be academic in nature and follow MLA documentation. International submissions are encouraged, but must be in English.

Contributors please send a 250-500 word abstract (or, if complete, the full essay), a short bio-note, and complete contact information to Carolina Rocha (crocha @ siue.edu) and Georgia Seminet (gseminet @ uta.edu).
Deadline for abstracts is September 1, 2010.
Complete manuscripts will be solicited after abstracts are fully reviewed.
